Before the appearance of the contemporary theater, rich performing arts were already present in Malaysia, including the traditional Chinese theatre and the traditional Malay operas. Among them, Mak Yong has been declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. In this lecture, Faridah Merican will connect the Malay traditions and the development of contemporary theatre with the concept of “renaissance”. The senior art curator Keng Yi-wei will play the role of the moderator to unfold the brilliant dialogue.
